WATERMAKER?? TOTALLY UNNECESSARY — THERE’S DRINKING WATER EVERYWHERE!!
WATERMAKER?? TOTALLY UNNECESSARY — THERE’S DRINKING WATER EVERYWHERE!!
We hear this all the time.
“They’re noisy.”
“They’re huge.”
“They constantly break down.”
“And in the end, they just sit there unused.”
Then comes one simple question:
“Do you actually have one on board?”
Quite often, the answer is:
“No.” 😉
And that’s where an important point gets overlooked:
A watermaker isn’t problematic because the technology doesn’t work.
It becomes problematic when it is incorrectly sized, poorly operated, or simply not used often enough.
Imagine this:
You’ve been anchored in a beautiful bay for several days.
Perfect weather.
No reason to head back to the marina.
Showers. Cooking. Brushing your teeth. Freshwater toilets.
And every day, the tank gets a little emptier.
Suddenly, the relaxed question becomes:
“Where are we going to get water?”
That’s exactly where a properly sized watermaker makes a difference.
And no — you don’t necessarily need a huge, noisy high-pressure system.
The first mistake is made when choosing the size.
Many people think:
“The bigger, the better.”
With watermakers, that can be exactly the wrong approach.
An oversized system simply doesn’t run often enough.
And lack of use is one of the worst things for a watermaker.
The membrane needs regular operation and flushing. With proper use and maintenance, modern membranes can last for many years — often around six to seven years, and sometimes considerably longer.
So the rule is simple:
Don’t buy the biggest watermaker. Buy the right one.
As a rule of thumb, determine your average daily water consumption and divide it by three. This gives you a good starting point for the required hourly production capacity.
Then comes the second question:
High-pressure or Energy Recovery?
Traditional high-pressure systems use a high-pressure pump to generate the required pressure.
They work — but they consume more energy and can be considerably noisier.
Modern Energy Recovery systems reuse a large part of the energy within the system, allowing them to operate much more efficiently and quietly.
And on a yacht, that makes a huge difference.
Because who wants to listen to a high-pressure pump while enjoying breakfast at anchor?
With modern systems, your watermaker can run quietly in the anchorage without turning your peaceful morning into an engine-room experience.
So the real question isn’t:
“Do I need a watermaker?”
It’s:
“Which watermaker is right for MY yacht?”
How many people are on board?
How much water do you actually use?
How long do you typically stay at anchor?
How much energy is available?
How important are noise and weight?
How frequently will the system actually run?
Get these questions right, and you don’t end up with another piece of equipment sitting unused on board.
You get freedom, independence and fresh drinking water wherever you choose to anchor.
We have installed hundreds of watermaker systems and work with them every day — from selection and installation to maintenance and service.
Our advice?
Don’t buy a watermaker based on brochure specifications alone.
Choose one that fits your yacht, your energy system and, most importantly, your life on board.
Because the best watermaker isn’t the biggest one.
It’s the one you use regularly — and the one that fits your needs perfectly.
